Opinions

Contraceptives act before fetus forms

I am writing in response to the opinions of Ms. Katie Dickmeyer, who argues that emergency contraception aborts fetuses. Emergency contraception is exactly what its name implies - contraception! It is a high dose of birth control pills. The American Medical Association, and more than 70 other health agencies, endorse emergency contraception as our nation's best defense against abortions and unintended pregnancies. The incoming president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists urges OB/GYNs to write advance prescriptions for emergency contraception pills so that women everywhere can act during the brief window between ovulation and implantation. If Ms. Dickmeyer wants to believe that pregnancy occurs before implantation in the uterus, she is welcome to do so. But most doctors disagree.

All women need easy access to emergency contraception in order to prevent unintended pregnancies and abortions. Access is especially important for the rape survivors that Planned Parenthood is trying to protect. These women do not need to be re-victimized by a rape-related pregnancy.
