Ice skating facility to
open in West Lafayette next year

When winter comes, West Lafayette children used
to strap on ice skates and go to a farm pond for an afternoon of skating.
It may have been fun, but the rough water and unsafe
conditions made it a dangerous pastime. This will all change soon as
West Lafayette residents and Purdue students will be able to enjoy a
safe skating rink.
Ground has already been broken on the Tapawingo
Riverside Ice Rink, which will be located in Tapawingo Park in the Levee,
said Joe Payne, superintendent of the West Lafayette Board of Parks
and Recreation. The rink is scheduled to open next winter.
Right now, crews are stabilizing the ground for
the rink and construction should begin next spring. The plans for the
rink should be completed by this winter.
According to Paula Woods, a member of the West
Lafayette Board of Parks and Recreation, the ice rink is proceeding
"very smoothly."
Fundraising for the project is proceeding smoothly
as well. So far, more than $1 million has been raised for the project,
with only $150,000 to $200,000 remaining to be raised. A local couple,
Eleanore and Robert McDonald, donated the first $100,000 but since then,
most of the donations have been from corporations, Payne said.
A sign showing the amount of donations the board
receives has been placed on Tapawingo Drive. Since then, donations have
increased, especially in the corporate sector, Payne said.
The remainder of the money will be raised in a
fund-raising push later this fall. The time frame and strategy of the
fund-raising was planned in a meeting last week.
The overall public reaction to the rink so far
has been enthusiastic, Woods said.
"The rink will be a nice environment, very safe
for the community to gather," Woods said.
There are a lot of opportunities for this space,
Woods said. She added that it would be a wonderful addition to the West
Lafayette community.
