An upcoming photography exhibition is bringing
high-quality art to Purdue. The Midwest Photography Invitational XI
will be at Purdue for the next two weeks.
Organized by the Lawton Gallery of the University
of Wisconsin in Green Bay, the invitational is beneficial for both students
and artists.
"It's essentially exposing students to the cutting
edge of the practice," said Stephen Perkins, curator of the Lawton Gallery.
"The artists get a lot of exposure and a chance to share the different
areas of interest they are exploring."
The exhibit originally only featured regional artists
from around the Midwest; however, it has expanded to include artists
from all over the country.
The invitational features a wide range of photography
from traditional black and white to contemporary digital images. There
are nearly 70 pictures from 25 artists, including several from Indiana.
The exhibit was started in 1980 and takes place
every other year. It is touring Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio and Indiana
from mid-January to April of 2002, and Purdue is its next stop.
"Purdue has an excellent photography school, so
we thought it would be appreciated," said Craig Martin, director of
the Purdue University Art Galleries.
"It's a wonderful idea," said Karen Norton, assistant
professor of visual and performing arts at Purdue. "Since it's an invitational,
there will be very high-quality artists," said Norton.
The Midwest Photography Invitational XI will be
at Purdue from Oct. 15 to Nov. 2 in the Ralph G. Beelke Gallery of the
Creative Arts Building Two.
