Jischke brings record, abilities to committeePurdue President Martin Jischke is now being nationally recognized for his fund-raising abilities and commitment to community service. His appointment to the board of directors of Campus Compact, an organization of university deans and presidents that focuses on community service, shows that his ideals and policies in his first year of office are impressive enough to receive national attention. We've always been told that Purdue is at the national forefront of universities, but it's encouraging to see it recognized by those outside our campus. With 750 member colleges, Jischke's position shows that Purdue has a leadership role in comparison to many other schools nationwide. They hope to learn from us and President Jischke will probably take away new ideas for bettering Purdue. Putting Jischke on the fund-raising committee was a wise move on the part of Campus Compact. With an outstanding record of setting goals and then exceeding them (in the case of last fiscal year, in which the University raised $60 million dollars more than it anticipated), Jischke provides an invaluable asset in bringing money to his causes. Community service programs may help people, but they don't always help profits. Since colleges are for-profit organizations, their service programs can be sacrificed in order to better other portions of their organization. Campus Compact then, provides support and funding to successful community programs undertaken by colleges. Jischke's fund-raising skills insure that they will have more money to support these programs, and his presence on the board of directors can insure that some new service ideas could be brought back here to Purdue. Purdue University is a massive community that is inseparable from the communities of Lafayette and West Lafayette that surround it. Though many students only pass on from here after a four-year stay, there's nothing wrong with bettering that community during their time here, and bettering themselves at the same time. n Editorial Board: Keith Thomas, Tom McHenry, Erica Sagon, Matt Poston, John Wakefield, Shawn McGann. |
