Columnist should have an open mindHello. I am a new employee here at Purdue, and have been reading the Exponent on a daily basis to keep abreast of the current events. I was aghast at the opinion in the paper, written by Shawn McGann. It seems to me that Mr. McGann has a very high opinion of himself. Apparently he is psychic, also. He appears to be able to sit in his lofty apartment, listen to people sing, and know their intentions in singing whatever song they are enjoying. Speaking from my greater years of experience, I am a Gulf War vet, people express their love of country in many ways. There is no 'right way' in which to do it, and it does not have to be solemn all of the time. Nor do they necessarily have to get the words right. I defy Mr. McGann to sing 'God Bless the USA', or even 'The Star Spangled Banner', and get all of the words and notes right. I was always led to believe that universities are some of the most open-minded institutions in our fair country. I believe that Mr. McGann should try to stretch his mind a little more, and "judge not, lest ye be judged". Phyllis D. Zickmund Purdue staff |
