At 8:30 a.m. Saturday the Indiana Pacers Foundation
will present the "Inside the Indiana Pacers Front Office" seminar
in the Purdue Memorial Union.
The seminar is an outreach program sponsored by
the department of health, kinesiology and leisure studies designed to
inform and recruit students into professional sports organizations.
Purdue is the first college campus to host these
seminars.
Tom Templin, director of health, kinesiology and
leisure studies, said the seminars are the beginning of a hopeful partnership
between the Indiana Pacers and Purdue.
"This involvement seeks to create more funding
for minority students through the interaction with the Pacers Foundation,"
Templin said. "It makes sense to have the Pacers do these seminars
at Purdue because it is an Indiana connection
I think that anyone
interested in becoming involved in professional sports organizations,
from the management of them to the athletes themselves, should plan
on attending."
The all-day seminars will inform students of the
internal workings of the Indiana Pacers and will give students a chance
to talk one-on-one with a number of guest speakers, including Pacers
vice presidents, former Indiana Pacer Darnell Hillman and Indiana Fever
player Stephanie McCarty.
Mike Henn, director of ticket sales for the Pacers,
said the Pacers are excited about doing the seminars at Purdue.
"We are looking forward to meeting the students
and the people of West Lafayette and Lafayette," Henn said. "And
we hope that we can continue these seminars for years to come."
Internship possibilities and floor prizes will
be available to participants at the seminars.
Tanya Roberts, ticket sales associate for the Pacers,
said the goal of the seminars is to encourage participants to become
informed and involved in professional sports organizations.
"The possibility of getting an internship
with us through these seminars is very likely," Roberts said. "That
is exactly why we are doing these seminars at Purdue. But they will
not only give students a chance to talk with representatives from the
business
but participants could walk away with many door prizes
including t-shirts and basketballs."
To register, interested participants can call the
Pacers at 317-917-2803 or go online at www.pacers.com. The registration
fee is $60 for students and $75 for non-students and will include an
autograph session with Stephanie McCarty and two tickets to the Nov.
16 Pacers game and two tickets to any home 2002 WNBA Indiana Fever game.
Students are encouraged to bring a resume to the
event to be considered for internship possibilities.
Templin said students should strongly consider
going to the seminars.
"Purdue should profit greatly from this event
I hope that many students will attend," he said.
