From Staff Reports
The Purdue women's basketball team is having tryouts from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. today in Mackey Arena.
The Boilers, who were last years Big Ten regular-season champions and NCAA runners-up, held their first official practice on Saturday and have only 10 players on the active roster.
"We've got a small roster this year, so we're really interested in trying to beef up our numbers in order to give us a little more depth," said Purdue coach Kristy Curry.
Female students wanting to try out should be dressed in practice clothes and be on the playing floor in Mackey by 4:30 p.m.
Curry, who will scout the talent along with her coaching staff, said there's no set number of players she's looking to add to the team.
"We'll be looking for talented, athletic players who we feel will fit in well with the nucleus of players we have in place," she said. "If there's a student-athlete out there who fits that mold and is a hard worker, we want to take a strong look at her."
One player the Purdue coaching staff took a long look at last season was Hannah Anderson, who spent last year as a manager for the Boilermakers. But this season she's on the active roster, as she became the 11th player ever to join the Purdue basketball team as a walk-on.
The redshirt freshman was a member of West Lafayette's Indiana Class 3A state championship team in 2000. As a senior for the Red Devils, Anderson averaged 14.2 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game.
