After being postponed due to the Sept. 11 terrorist
attacks, Discover Purdue Week will start up again Monday.
The weeklong celebration is being held to launch
Purdue's yearlong fund-raising campaign Discover Purdue
and announce some of the biggest gifts in the University's history.
The campaign is designed to bring attention to research and other activities
being conducted at the University. Each day of the week a gift to the
University will be announced.
"We hope that it is exciting for everyone, students
as well as faculty, alumni and citizens of the state," said President
Martin Jischke. "(Its) more evidence of Purdue moving toward the
next level."
He notified people of the new dates Monday during
the University Senate meeting.
The Discover Purdue announcements will occur next
week to coincide with events leading up to Homecoming. Jischke said
he thinks it is an appropriate week to continue with the events.
Carolyn Gery, associate vice president for development,
said since some of the announcements have already been made, next week's
Discover Purdue Week will consist of a new lineup of announcements.
The week, originally scheduled to run from Sept.
7 to Sept. 15, was postponed before all the announcements had been made.
The last announcement a gift of equipment from the Marines
was made early on Sept. 11 shortly after everyone received news of what
occurred in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania. The rest of
the week was postponed indefinitely.
"We didn't feel we could celebrate at that point;
everything was put on hold," said Gery.
Some of the announcements that were delayed include
gifts for the School of Consumer and Family Sciences and interdisciplinary
efforts.
Announcements that were made included the largest
single gift for a facility in the history of the University $30
million for the soon-to-be-built Birck Nanotechnology Center. Purdue
also received a gift of $10 million for the nanotechnology center and
a gift of pesticide patents from DuPont.
Gery said she feels enough time has passed since
the attacks to continue the celebration.
"It's going to be a great week. We're very excited
about the announcements," she said.
Other announcements are scheduled to occur throughout
the year.
