Beer sign provides much needed lightThis past weekend, my dear father handed down to me something that his older brother gave him when he went to college: a large blue florescent "Cold Beer" sign. The pure magnificence of the sign cannot be properly expressed in words and can only be truly appreciated as one passes by building five at Hilltop. Now, I myself am not a big fan of beer at all; however, I still chose to display the sign in the front window to let others marvel in its beauty. Apparently, no alcoholic signs, posters, etc. can be seen from the window. Not even three days after its debut did three Hilltop counselors appear at our door requesting it be taken down immediately and giving us 24 hours to change it or take it down. Now, sure I realize that it is an alcohol sign, but it also is a light. Both my roommates and I lock our bikes directly outside the window and this light prevents possible theft or vandalism to them. It also lights up the street and sidewalk for cars as well as the many Hilltop residents who pass by our building. Additionally, the light helps set our apartment out from the others and makes it easily identifiable to all of our parents and other visitors, who seem to have no problem with it. However, we had no choice but to cover up the "r" in "Cold Beer" and the labels on the two cans of beer. The once magnificent sign now looks cheap as it displays "Cold Bee." Although it still serves its purpose as the beacon at the top of "The Hill," it just isnt as classy. The worst part is that everybody still knows what it should say, so what does it really matter if we cover it up? Shawn Curry Freshman, Schools of Engineering |
