Negligence in reporting offends many readersThe "man dressed up as a Native American" is more than that. He is Bob Moody, former tribal chairman for the Pokagon band of the Potawatomi, and he is Native American. He is not "dressed up." He is wearing his traditional regalia and each piece of clothing he is wearing or item he is holding has special significance to him personally and to his culture. Regalia is defined as "decorations or insignia indicative of an office or membership." By not doing the legwork or making a phone call to get some background information on the picture you printed, you lost the opportunity to pass on some facts. Instead, with less than one sentence, you offended many people. As I was told years ago by friends, "People going to Halloween parties dress up; we wear our culture's regalia." Even though the Exponent is student-run, there is no reason or excuse to not take a few minutes and be sure the information that is being printed portrays people and events in a correct and appropriate manner. In this case, all it would have taken is a phone call to the Tippecanoe County Historical Society, and they would probably have been able to tell you who was in the picture just from his description.
