Cancer awareness groups plan events for whole year

By Emily Baldauf
Senior Writer

Although the month of October is designated as breast cancer awareness month, there are activities held all year long that increase awareness while raising money for education and research. The following is a list of just some of the local events already planned to continue to raise awareness for breast cancer throughout the year:

N "Race for the Cure," sponsored by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, has become the largest 5K run/walk series in the world. Races are held throughout the year in 112 cities across the nation. Indianapolis will host their annual "Race for the Cure" on Saturday, April 23, 2002. For more information or to register go to www.raceforthecure.com

N Every spring the women of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority hold their annual "Big Man on Campus" philanthropy. In 2001, the sorority raised more than $10,000 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation with the male beauty pageant featuring Purdue students.

N On Mother’s Day, the Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization will hold their annual Y-ME RACE Against Breast Cancer in Grant Park in Chicago. The 5K run, 1-mile walk and 3-mile walk have raised $1.5 million in the last 10 years. For more information visit www.y-me.org/race.

N Each summer, the American Cancer Society sponsors the "Relay for Life" events that are held nationwide and in several Indiana counties including Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Shelby, Johnson, Morgan, Hendricks and Marion counties. "Relay for Life" is a non-competitive event in which teams of runners and walkers pace the track for 24 hours to raise funds and increase awareness for the American Cancer Society. Last year over $169 million was raised nationwide with similar relays. For more information visit www.cancer.org.
