School rivalry promotes donations

After hearing about the annual Indiana University-Purdue University Blood Donor Challenge before giving blood at Meredith Hall Monday, Elizabeth Morge let out a cheer, and tried to convince her friend to donate as well.

Morge, a freshman in the Schools of Engineering, said she feels this competition will help motivate more people to donate. At a nearby table, Stephanie Holdman-Briscoe, a freshman in the School of Education, agreed and said, "especially on this campus because IU and Purdue have a big rivalry."

This is the competition's fifth year. Donations will be taken from now until Nov. 16 and will count toward each school's final total. The university with the most donations wins, and will be honored at the IU-Purdue football game in Bloomington, Ind., on Nov. 24.

In addition to the school rivalry, the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 are also a motivator for people to give blood. "I wanted to give when I heard about it," said Morge, "but I didn't get a chance."

It is hoped that holding blood drives on campus will reach more students. Julia Vaysburd, a freshman in the School of Science, who thought it was convenient to have the blood drive in her residence hall, said, "I would have given earlier, but I had no way to get all the way down (to other donor sites)."

Thousands of lives are saved every day by blood donations, and Purdue students and staff can do their part in the coming weeks during drives held on campus.

N 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Tarkington Hall, Intramural and Stadium drives.

N 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the Accounting Association in the Purdue Memorial Union.

N 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Monday through Oct. 31 at Alpha Phi Omega Boilermakers, 101 North Grant St.

Those who plan on donating must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, and present photo I.D.
