Family donates money for
sitting area

Students who have walked past Stanley Coulter Hall
recently may have noticed the new sitting area on the east side of the
building.
The area, the Martha Christine Butler Interaction
Garden, is a gift from the Butler family in memory of Marti, who graduated
from Purdue in 1973 and died in February 1998.
The garden features 10 cast bronze plaques set
in the existing concrete sidewalk with benches surrounding the area.
The plaques are intended to stimulate conversation between those sitting
in the garden, said John Collier of Purdue's department of facilities
planning and construction.
It is a place where people can meet, sit, reflect
and talk. They can also relax and enjoy the space around them.
Each plaque is engraved with a quote from famous
figures such as Mother Teresa, George Carlin and Eleanor Roosevelt.
Butler's husband, David, initiated the idea for the garden to honor
Butler.
"The reason for the article is simple; I think
it's extremely important for people to learn how to take care of each
other," said David. "Marti was exceptionally bright and talented but
more than that she was a joy to be around because of her energy and
positive outlook.
"Almost amazingly the place where Marti and I first
met is visible from the site," he said. They met on Sept. 14, 1971,
after a dance near the Union.
The interaction garden was to be dedicated in September,
but some of Butler's family was unable to attend the ceremony, so it
will be formally dedicated in the spring, said Collier. He also said
the site is open to students now, though.
"The memorial is a lovely reflection of Marti and
we are very happy to be able to share this glimpse of her with Purdue
and its many visitors," said David.
