Purdue should bring cannon back to fieldIn these troubled times, we need to show our support to our soldiers abroad who are willing to risk their lives to prevent further loss of life here at home. Here at Purdue, we are seeped in military tradition and history. The current incarnation of the marching band started as military band, and Purdue has had a long-standing ROTC program. Purdue's reputation of being the cradle of astronauts generated from a military education program here in the 1960's. To this end, I suggest bringing back the field artillery piece, or "cannon" to the football games. For those who haven't been here long enough, in years past, the ROTC program had a large artillery gun in Ross-Ade stadium during home football games. The gun was fired every time Purdue scored, in a similar manner as the train whistle you hear today. The tradition was discontinued in 1999 for various reasons. I believe that bringing back the gun would show our support not only for our soldiers abroad, but also for our government in their military actions overseas. Also, it really bolsters morale in the stadium. Nothing invokes fear more in an opposing team than to be passing a football with a large gun pointed their direction. So ... bring back the Cannon!
