Job fair offers positions in high-tech fields

Students in the high-tech job fields will have the chance to participate in the ultimate trick-or-treat this Halloween.

These students won't be looking for candy, but they will have the chance to find employment or an internship at this year's High-Tech Job Fair for Indiana Companies.

The job fair, which will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday in the Purdue Memorial Union Ballrooms, will feature Indiana companies, including several located in the greater Lafayette area.

"We have 60 companies trying to fill over 300 fulltime and internship positions," said David McKinnis, director of the technical assistance program. The job fair is sponsored by the schools of Agriculture, Engineering, Management, Science and Technology and the Center for Career Opportunities.

McKinnis said the fair is aimed at students in all the computer-related fields as well as students in engineering, management information systems, biology and chemistry.

The job fair is part of an effort to reduce the "brain drain" in the state, said McKinnis — the problem of students leaving Indiana to pursue careers elsewhere.

"There have been many efforts by Purdue made in the state to increase the number of companies in the high-tech industry," said McKinnis. "High-tech companies, such as the ones located at the Purdue Research Park, are the future of Indiana."

Jeffery Matthews, director of industrial experience, said the job fair is educational for students as well as the companies looking to hire students.

"(The job fair) not only enables students to see what kind of jobs are available in the industry, but it's also educational for the companies to meet with students and see what skills they are offering," he said.

McKinnis said the job fair is following the trend of the nation's recent economic slowdown; only 60 companies will be attending this year compared to the 100 companies during the previous three years. However, he said the companies attending the fair are still looking to hire a lot of people and that there's no slowdown in that respect.

"The companies that are coming are looking to hire people and there's students who are going to get jobs," McKinnis said.
