PSG needs chance to change, improveI am forever amazed at how unwilling people can be to accept change. After reading the editorial about Purdue Student Government in Wednesdays Exponent, that same closed-minded thinking has shown through once again. I am a firm believer that if students expect PSG to change and improve, thats going to take effort by many, not by a few. Since the referendum last spring, the senate is now based on representatives from each academic school, not by housing units as it was in the past. It was stated that because of the new representation, the new senate would ONLY deal with academic issues. This accusation is unfounded. Serving as an interim senator this fall, I can personally testify to the fact that the new PSG senate discussed a wide variety of issues. We discussed academic issues, housing issues and student life issues. Having never lived in a residence hall myself, I had spent a great deal of time in a committee talking about the issue of expanding Dining Dollars and improving the system. I realize that getting involved in leadership positions opens us up to criticism by many, however as a newly elected senator for the School of Agriculture, I can say honestly that I am not pursuing a personal agenda. My job is to speak for the students in the School of Agriculture to the best of my ability, and the issues that I am informed of from Ag student council members are not limited to academic issues. It is not going to change overnight, and I think the new senate deserves a chance to prove themselves. As it stands now, this paper bashed them the very day they were to be sworn in. I am asking you to be fair, and let us show you why these changes were so badly needed, and why the new PSG will serve Purdue students far better than before.
