Off-campus housing vacancies increase

Jeni Ware has been working in the local housing market for 11 years and she has never seen the student housing market look like it does now.

"I've never seen this many vacancies this close to campus," said Ware, who now works as the leasing manager for Jefferson Commons. "There's just never been this many vacancies for a long time."

The number of vacancies in the West Lafayette area isn't because of a decline in Purdue's enrollment — last year Purdue officials decided to keep the University's enrollment stable after several years of growth — but because of the recent growth in off-campus housing options.

State holds technology funds

Purdue may not be able to purchase new computers or renovate computer labs this year if University officials don't find alternate funds to replace those being withheld by the state.

A $6.9 million nonrecurring technology appropriation, which is usually received biennially from the state, was already figured into Purdue's budget and marked for use. Because of the state's financial troubles, however, the University probably won't receive the money during this fiscal year.

A Tippecanoe County Superior Court judge could soon be announcing the fate of the civil lawsuit brought against Purdue University by the parents of slain residence hall counselor, Jay Severson.

Students show little worry about anthrax on campus

Only one person on campus has gone to the Student Health Center to request an anthrax test this semester.

Dr. Sarah Sager, clinical director of the health center, said there have been a few phone calls from people inquiring about tests and one person who's come in specifically asking for one.
