Purdue awaits judges
ruling on civil lawsuit
From Staff reports
A Tippecanoe County Superior Court judge could
soon be announcing the fate of the civil lawsuit brought against Purdue
University by the parents of slain residence hall counselor, Jay Severson.
On Monday, Judge George Heid heard arguments on
whether Don and Sandy Severson, Jay's parents, can recover damages stemming
from the Oct. 16, 1996 death of their son. The wrongful death lawsuit
holds Purdue University, Purdue's board of trustees and the Tippecanoe
County Sheriff's Department as defendants in the case, alleging that
their actions are in part accountable for Jay's death.
Heid is expected to decide whether or not to grant
the defendants' motion for summary judgement. If he does grant the judgement,
the case would probably be over; if Heid denies the motion, a jury trial
could be scheduled within weeks.
Heid has not commented on how soon he will make
a ruling.
