for charity

Purdues annual penny wars between residence
halls recently wrapped up, raising a total of $6197.61 for the United
Way.
The penny wars are a method of fundraising in which
students donate pennies and dollars in order to earn positive points
for their floor while donating silver coins in order to lower competing
floors' scores. The fundraiser concluded on Friday.
Shreve Hall won this year, raising a total of $762.68,
but Meredith Hall was also considered a winner because it raised $1.07
per resident.
Depending on which hall they reside in, the winners
will receive a pizza or ice cream party. The winners, along with having
their names engraved on a plaque and hung up in the Smalley Center,
will also receive a new traveling trophy to be displayed inside their
hall.
Last year, the contest generated more than $8,000.
"Unfortunately," said Chantal Breedlove, the residence hall council
president and a senior in the School of Liberal Arts, "due to the incidents
on Sept. 11 people have been giving more money to the Red Cross and
less to other charities."
The United Way collects money and gives its earnings
to other charities. It's possible that the money raised will go to the
Red Cross and those families in New York and Washington, D.C., that
need help. However, it is possible that the money could be used around
the community as well.
Other ways to donate are available. Residence halls
are preparing to do different programs such as a gong show where perishable
items and money will be collected. Erin Taylor, the student chair of
the 2001 United Way campaign and a senior in the School of Consumer
and Family Sciences, said, "Other student organizations, such as Navy
and Air Force ROTC, will be setting up an obstacle course and taking
donations. Fraternities and sororities have also raised over $5000 during
Greek Week for such charities. There are always different competitions
to raise money."
Taylor is extremely proud of everything that people
on campus have done to help. "It's all very inspiring to see students
collaborating for people in the community and in the relief effort,"
she said.
