Songs such as "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and
"That's What Friends Are For" are just a couple songs slotted for the
Black Voices of Inspiration performance at 7 tonight in the North Ballroom
of the Purdue Memorial Union.
The performance, titled "Black Voices of Inspiration:
A Menu of African American Music," is the musical group's first performance
of the season. This is also the first time that musicians will be present
to offer a musical backdrop to the choir's vocals.
"With the two groups coming together, musicians
and vocalists, it should be an interesting angle," said Olateju Omolodun,
assistant director of the Black Cultural Center.
Established in 1975, Black Voices of Inspiration
has become one of the most respected choirs in Indiana.
The group has performed in venues across the state
to a wide array of audiences including the Indianapolis Colts Christmas
Program the last two years.
Their performance offers insight to the African-American
perspective and its message is conveyed through several genres of music
- jazz, blues, gospel, rhythm-and-blues, spirituals, hip-hop and anthems.
Beejan Savabi, project leader for Purdue Student
Union Board, which is promoting the event, said that the concert will
be an enjoyable learning experience for all Purdue students.
"This is a great opportunity for students to learn
more about the history and culture of African-American music," said
Savabi, a junior in the School of Management,.
· Tickets for the show are $3 for students
and $6 for non-students and are available at the door.
