Purdue coach Joe Tiller had no problem summing up the second-worst loss of his Purdue coaching career — Saturday's 38-13 failure to Illinois in Ross-Ade Stadium.

"One team made plays that resulted in points versus the other team that didn't make plays," Tiller said. "We certainly had a lot of opportunities early and weren't able to put them away, and to their credit and their maturity they hung in there and won the football game."

In the first half, Purdue's defense played about as well as it possibly could have, Tiller said. The Boilers forced four turnovers in the first half, with Landon Johnson, Gilbert Gardner and Stu Schweigert making interceptions off of Illinois senior quarterback Kurt Kittner and Gardner adding a fumble recovery.

Hance: 'I didn't play a good game'

By Greg Doddridge
Staff Writer

Quarterback Brandon Hance was in a down, but brutally honest mood Saturday after Purdue's 38-13 loss to Illinois.

"I didn't play a good game," said Hance. "There is nothing to cheer about.

"I don't think I have been doing as good of a job as I can do physically."

Hance finished the day having completed 15 of 29 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown, which came late in the first quarter on an eight-yard throw to Seth Morales. But it was his two interceptions in the second half, which the Fighting Illini converted into 14 points that drew boos from the crowd.
