Car with three students
hits utility pole
From Staff Reports
Three Purdue students were injured in a car accident
Thursday morning.
Kristopher C. McLaughlin, a sophomore in the School
of Liberal Arts from Knox, Ind., hit a utility pole at 10:59 a.m. Thursday
on 18th Street in Lafayette near the Pythian Home. McLaughlin was driving
a 1989 red Ford Mustang and had two passengers in the car Seth
T. Ponder, a sophomore in the School of Technology from Granger, Ind.,
and Tucker W. Parrett, a sophomore in the School of Liberal Arts from
Huntington, Ind.
The car was going north on 18th Street when another
vehicle reportedly made a left turn in front of it, said Sgt. Chris
Donard of the Lafayette Police.
According to the police report, McLaughlin hit
the breaks and tried to avoid it and his car traveled 140 feet before
striking a utility pole with the right front bumper. The police report
said McLaughlin's car was traveling at 55 mph; however, one of the passengers
told the police it was traveling at "a high rate of speed."
McLaughlin, who suffered a dislocated hip, was
taken to St. Elizabeth's Medical Center and was listed in fair condition
Thursday evening.
Tucker, who according to the police report complained
of internal injuries, was taken to Home Hospital and discharged.
Ponder was taken to Home Hospital and then flown
by Lifeline to Indianapolis' Methodist Hospital because of severe internal
injuries; he was listed as critical Thursday evening.
