Attorney awaits physical evidence report

By Dave Stephens

It could still be several weeks before Tippecanoe County prosecutor Jerry Bean decides whether Zhan Yin could face the death penalty.

Yin, 27, a graduate student in biology, is charged with the Aug. 2 murder of Yeunkyung Woo, 31, a doctoral student in biology, and her sister, Hyo Kyung Woo, 29, of Chicago. The women were found stabbed and beaten in Yeunkyung's Purdue Village apartment.

Yin has 12 counts filed against him — two of murder, two of murder while attempting to commit burglary or robbery, two of robbery, two of confinement, two of theft and single ones of both burglary and attempted arson.

On Friday, Bean meet with magistrate Wayne Fountain and Yin's defense attorneys Steven Meyer and Kevin O'Reily to discuss the status of the case.

Bean said he is waiting until state police scientists finish examining all evidence in the case, which could take several weeks. He added that he has already received a report on the crime scene's DNA analysis, but is still waiting other physical evidence — including information from fingerprints and hair.

Bean, who said he expects to possibly receive more information from the police lab today, said he will make a decision on which penalty to seek after reviewing all of the information — a process that could take several weeks.

Yin's defense attorneys withdrew a motion to create an "ex-parte" file, which would have allowed the defense to submit bills for payment to the court without disclosing information to the prosecutor.

But the defense also asked to have some payment files sealed from the prosecution, such as information about Yin's financial status and requests to have Yin evaluated by psychiatrists.

Lawyers on both sides were urged to move forward in the case, which is scheduled for trial on May 13, 2002. The lawyers will meet again to discuss the case at a status conference on Nov. 30, at the Tippecanoe County courthouse.
