More than 10 tables full of delectable chocolate treats lined the inside of the Armory at the Death by Chocolate V contest. The dessert lovers in attendance Friday night got exactly what they came for — plates full of all the chocolate they could get their hands on.

"I’m a huge dessert fan; I just went along the line and picked out what looked good," said Laura Hawk, a freshman in the School of Liberal Arts. "The problem was, it all looked good."

Although this was the fifth year for the event, it was the first time for many of the people who came to sample some of the Greater Lafayette area’s best chocolate.

"I had heard about it before, so I decided to come tonight because all these desserts in one place guarantees a good time," said Krista Kardesh, a junior in the School of Liberal Arts.

The winner of overall best taste was the chocolate truffle prepared by the Union, but the contest wasn’t the most important aspect of the event.

"This is our first year, and we are really fortunate to be involved with something that’s fun and is helping raise money for a good cause," said Deb Parker, the youth director at Fowler United Church.

Parker said the group is using some of the proceeds from Death by Chocolate to help build a youth center.

"We want (the youth center) to be somewhere where the kids can just gather and have fun," she said.

Five members of the youth group made various chocolate desserts, including dirt pudding, fudge and brownies. It means a lot to the children from the youth group to be able to be involved in raising the money that will go to build their center.

"It’s really good to see people gathering to raise money for churches; it brings everyone together for a good cause," said Ladena Lewis, a seventh grader at Benton Central and a member of the Fowler United Church youth group.

The Fowler youth were not the only people who enjoyed serving those who came to sample the sweets. David Moore, a sophomore in the School of Liberal Arts and a member of the Reserves Officer Training Corps, volunteered his time to help the church.

"I just did it because I like having fun with the little kids; they are great to be around," said Moore.
