Writer must not criticize holiday season ritualsI see that the Christmas season is upon us. I am beginning to hear carols broadcast over store PA systems, watch advertisements on television for CDs and videos that portray the spirit of the season, and read the rantings of the disgruntled in the newspapers on the subject of "Christmas is too commercial." Mr. Poston's whining article about the death of Christmas by the ding of ringing cash registers and our disregard for observing holidays by their proper placement on the calendar only breathes annual life into this seasonal theme that I have been subjected to my entire life. I am always amazed at the same feeble arguments put forward by those who believe it is their duty to remind everyone at this time of year how we have all forgotten the true meaning of Christmas because we choose to buy our loved ones a gift or two (or 10 for that matter). I see nothing wrong with that practice in this season, as it is one that I also participate in throughout the entire year. If you believe that the Christmas season is too long, Mr. Poston, you have truly lost its meaning in your life. The words that Charles Dickens wrote for the "Spirit of Christmas" present must stand as an indictment of your views: "Mortal! He whose life we celebrate at Christmas does not live in men's hearts only one day, but all 365."I appreciate that you have a certain number of column inches that you are required to fill, but may I recommend that you use that space for original comments and issues? The next time someone asks you if you think Christmas is too commercial, give them the answer that I believe best suits such a ludicrous inquiry: "Not in my house."
