Team earns top finish in
opener
The Purdue wrestling team opened its 2001-02 season
with a first-place finish at the Navy Classic in Baltimore, Md. by earning
131 points to top the eight-team field.
The Boilermakers tallied two first-place individual
finishes, three second-place finishes, and two third-place finishes
on the day to beat second-place West Virginia by six points.
Chris Fleeger swept his three matches to take first
place at 125 pounds in his first intercollegiate competition. He defeated
second-seeded Geoff Head of Virginia Tech in the title match (F 0:43).
Jake Vercelli won three consecutive bouts and captured
the title in the heavyweight class with a 2-1 win over Navys Stephen
Kovach.
Purdue placed two wrestlers in the top three at
157, as Jeremy Bibelhauser finished second and Brad Harper placed third.
Jon Bush took home a second-place finish at 197, while Jon Fitch placed
third at 184.
"Our guys had a very good performance," said head
coach Jessie Reyes. "I am pleased with the great effort that we had
today."
The Boilermakers resume action on Saturday, Nov.
24 at the Mat Town Invitational in Lockhaven, Pa.
