Volleyball team loses to Hoosiers and Illini

The Purdue volleyball team dropped its last two road matches of the season on Friday and Saturday, as it was defeated by Indiana and No. 21 Illinois.

The Boilers (4-23, 1-17 Big Ten) lost to Illinois (19-7, 12-6) in four games, 25-30, 21-30, 30-25 and 30-28.

Senior Maegan Petersen led Purdue with 16 kills, and sophomore Joanna Lowry recorded 14 kills and a team-high of 20 digs. Eryn Leach turned in 10 kills and senior Lauren Knicker had 13 digs.

After being defeated in Games 1 and 2, Purdue won game three 30-25.

The Boilers overcame a 23-15 Illini lead to get within two at the 27-25 mark of Game 4. Purdue went on a 3-2 run to get within one at 29-28, but the Illini fought to avoid a Game 5.

The Boilers fell to Indiana on Friday, 22-30, 25-30, 30-27, 30-24, in the 20th annual Monon Spike match.

The Boilermakers had their chances, getting up to a 20-16 lead in Game 1 only to be outscored 14-2 down the stretch. Purdue's troubles continued in Game 2 when the Boilers built a 23-17 lead, on to get outscored 13-2 to close the match.

Purdue won game three 30-27. But the Boilermakers only recorded nine kills on 44 attempts in Game 4.

Lowry led the Boilermakers with 18 kills and 10 digs. Petersen recorded 16 kills and turned in a team-high of14 digs. Rookie Leah Wischmeier had 11 kills and 10 digs on the night, while Knicker recorded 11 digs.

The Boilermakers will play their last two matches of the season at home against Wisconsin and Northwestern.
