International enrollment ranks first

A recently released survey ranks Purdue's international enrollment as the highest of any public institution in the country and fourth highest at any university in the nation.

The survey, conducted by the Institute for International Education, is based on enrollment numbers from 2000 and doesn't take into account the 2001 international enrollment figures — which increased by 5.3 percent.

"Our ranking will probably go up next year," said Michael Brzezinski, director of the office of international students and scholars. "I'm sure we'll remain the top public institution and we will probably be within the top three institutions in the country."

According to the survey results, Purdue ranks behind New York University, the University of Southern California and Columbia University in the number of international students enrolled.

International enrollment for the 2001 fall semester included 4,695 students from 132 different countries. More than 70 percent of Purdue's international students come from Asia, with the 929 students coming from India, 707 from the People's Republic of China and 515 students from South Korea.

Brzezinski said international students help create an atmosphere that is conducive to learning.

"Students from other countries enrich the educational experience of all students at Purdue," said Brzezinski. "They can share viewpoints and ideas with us that we might not otherwise know."

The majority of international students, 2,690, are pursuing graduate or professional degrees; 2,005 are enrolled in undergraduate academic programs. The Schools of Engineering have the highest percentage of international students at 45.6 percent, followed by the School of Science with 16.1 percent, the School of Management with 13.8 percent, the School of Liberal Arts with 6.9 percent and the School of Agriculture with 4.8 percent.

Brzezinski said aggressive recruitment efforts have helped attract the best international students to Purdue, but that Purdue's reputation is what really attracts students here. "The excellence of Purdue is spread by word of mouth; that is by far our best marketing tool," he said.

Applications for the fall 2002 semester are also up slightly this year from last year, said Brzezinski, despite increased scrutiny of student visa applications stemming from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"We're working on several programs to help international students apply for and get their student visas," said Brzezinski. "Basically we're telling them to get their applications sent in early and to submit their visa applications earlier to the U.S. embassies."
