Purdue Student Government has a game plan.
At Monday night's Student Senate meeting, Ryan
Hatton, senator from the School of Management and chair of the student
affairs committee, said the committee has decided not to look into only
the Dining Dollars issue.
"Not just residence halls. Not just Dining Dollars.
We're talking about all food services on campus," he said.
After hearing student concerns, the committee was
looking into whether Dining Dollars could be used in the Purdue Memorial
Union. Hatton said the committee is still looking at that as well as
students being able to use Boiler Express in businesses off campus.
Boiler Express works similar to a debit card students put in
a certain amount of money and can then use it on various locations throughout
campus.
The committee is also looking into meal plans of
other Big Ten universities. So far the committee is looking at Indiana
University's meal plan as a model to follow. The meal plan in Indiana
University's Residential Programs and Services is based on a point system.
A student puts in a certain amount of money and in turn receives points
to purchase food. The program also allows students to use the points
in off-campus locations.
Purdue's meal plans give students a set number
of meals each week as well as Dining Dollars which can be used
only in the University Residences.
Hatton said the committee has a due date of next
Wednesday for gathering all information. Members of the committee are
also interviewing students and speaking with members of the administration.
There is not a set timetable after that but PSG
is planning to present its findings to the University Residences within
a few weeks.
In other PSG business, the senators voted to approve
a resolution that will clarify the process by which money that has been
allocated to the programming board is used and reviewed.
The senators also voted to amend to the Constitution
to state that senators from University Division now represent the Undergraduate
Studies Program. University Division and Undergraduate Studies programs
merged into one office over the summer, because they served a similar
purpose.
