University to host forum
on ResNet

Working as a residential computer consultant, Tia
Cox hears complaints about Purdue's Residence Network (ResNet) regularly.
Cox, a senior in the Schools of Engineering, said
the majority of the complaints are about slow connection speeds and
download times. And, although it's part of her job to help students
with their computer problems, she said the problems with ResNet aren't
within her ability to solve.
"I think the biggest problem is people just downloading
an insane amount of information," said Cox. "Most people are understanding
about the problem; they understand that they can't download huge files
all the time, but so far there hasn't been a solution."
Jerry Sheehan, assistant vice president for operations
and planning in the office of the vice president for information technology,
said the problems with residential computer services have plagued college
campuses all across the country this year and so far, few solutions
have been found.
One possible solution implemented by Purdue officials
was the creation of a rate-limiting policy. According to the policy,
which can be found at www.purdue.edu/resnet/docs/policy.htm, a system
has been created to measure the incoming and outgoing traffic on ResNet
and limits the bandwidth usage available to users who exceed certain
data transfer thresholds.
The policy, which applies to all 13,300 ResNet
high-speed and 1,300 dial-in users, slows the data transfer speed of
users who exceed 125 megabytes in a rolling 24-hour period.
But the rate limiting system, which has been in
place since the spring semester, has had little effect on ResNet's connection
speeds. To help find other possible solutions to the problem a forum
is being held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Stewart Center, Room
323 to discuss solutions to the problem.
"Students and ResNet user's should attend the forum
to learn about the current state of the network and efforts under discussion
to improve the quality of service," said Sheehan. "Participants will
be encouraged to share their viewpoints."
Sheehan said the goal of the forum is to help develop
solutions to ResNet problems.
"There are a number of technically valid and fiscally
sound actions that can be taken to incrementally improve the quality
of service," said Sheehan. "Our hope is to use the forum to discuss
these options with our user community and then move forward with implementation."
