Wrestlers finish second in Pennsylvania meet

By Purdue Sports Information

The Purdue wrestling team followed up last week’s first-place finish with a second-place finish at the Mat Town Invitational in Lockhaven, Pa.

Sophomore Chris Fleeger earned the tournament’s outstanding wrestler award. The Trout Run, Pa., native captured the 125-pound title with a victory over Penn State’s Justin Kast. Fleeger has won both of his first two collegiate meets this year.

"Chris Fleeger continued to wrestle very well for us," said Coach Jessie Reyes. "He was dominant today and deserving of the outstanding wrestler award."

Jake Vercelli placed first in the heavyweight class, defeating Penn State’s Josh Walker for the title.

Oscar Santiago (165) and Ryan Lange (174) placed second in their weight classes. Brad Harper placed third at 157 and Dan Jankowski took fourth at 149.

Overall, the second-place Boilermakers compiled 151.5 points as Big Ten rival Penn State earned the team title with a score of 161.5.

"Our guys wrestled very well today," said Reyes. "I was pleased with our performance against some top competition."

Purdue returns to action on Dec. 8 at the Missouri Valley meet at Columbia, Mo.
