Volleyball team finishes worst season in Purdue history

By Purdue Sports Information

The Purdue volleyball team lost its last two matches of the season this weekend, falling to No. 6 Wisconsin and Northwestern in the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility.

The Boilers (4-25, 1-19 Big Ten) lost to Northwestern in five games Saturday to end the worst season in the 26-year history of Purdue volleyball.

"This was a fiercely contested match and it was tough to see either team lose," said coach Jeff Hulsmeyer, whose team finished last in the conference and lost 19 consecutive conference matches. "Our players left everything on the court and that’s all you can ask."

Following senior night activities, senior Christy Case left the gym due to illness. Senior Maegan Petersen and sophomore Erin Leach were both ill as well. Leach was unable to compete, but Petersen recorded seven kills and 11 digs before her exit following Game 2. Senior Lauren Knicker was the lone upperclassman who was able to play the entire match.

"Lori did an outstanding job for us," Hulsmeyer said. "She’s just that type of player. She came out and gave all she could for her team."

Knicker recorded a career-high of 19 kills. Freshman Leah Wischmeier led the Boilermakers with 20 kills. Sophomore Joanna Lowry recorded 17 kills and 16 digs, while freshman Kim McConaha turned in 11 kills and 18 digs. Setter Jen Bova recorded a double-double with 55 assists and 20 digs.

The Boilers' three-game loss to the Badgers (25-3, 19-1) Friday gave Wisconsin the Big Ten title.

Lowry led the Boilermakers with 10 kills and 11 digs. All-American Sherisa Livingston led the Badgers with 15 kills.
