Now in its seventh year, the Crystal Apple Award
is given to reward teachers for their work. Purdues School of
Education gives the award to honor local educators and organizations
that have made a difference in students' lives.
The Crystal Apple Award is given annually to honor
"exemplary educators and recognize the vital support organizations
provide to the School of Education," said Jill Lesh, director of
alumni relations.
Members of the Dean's Club, a group of donors who
support the school, choose award winners. Each member has the opportunity
to nominate someone who has had "some type of impact on them or
their children or children at large," said Jerry Peters, interim
dean of the School of Education.
Sheila Klinker, D-27th, was the recipient of one
of the 2001 Crystal Apple Awards. As outreach liaison in the School
of Education, she works in three main areas she is co-chair for
professional development schools and works with the Ackerman Center
and the Purdue Literacy Network Project.
"It is very meaningful because it comes from
your peers," Klinker said. "I have won some awards before,
but this means more because it is my career."
Klinker had the distinction of both nominating
an award winner as well as being a recipient herself. She was unaware
she had been chosen until she received a letter in the mail three days
later what she called a "good secret."
Peters explained why it is so important to honor
educators. "They have excelled," he said. "(It's important) to
let them know theyve had a positive impact on the lives of young
people."
The Crystal Apple Award recognizes the commitment
and passion educators have for teaching. A ceremony in the John Purdue
room on Oct. 26 brought all the award winners together where the recipients
were able to hear their nominators comments.
Other award winners were Carolyn Claussen, Title
I coordinator and comprehensive school reform demonstration facilitator
at Lafayettes Washington Elementary; John Pearl, assistant principal
at Klondike Elementary in West Lafayette; Lois Smiley, a former teacher
in West Lafayettes Cumberland Elementary School; and Melanie Swift,
the current principal at Cumberland.
In addition to honoring five educators, two organizations
also received the Crystal Apple Award. The Gannett Foundation and the
Harrison Kiwanis Club were honored for the support they have provided
for three recent school initiatives.
