University employs many great chemists

I would like to thank the Purdue Exponent for their very positive coverage of my recent Fresenius Award (Thursday, Nov. 8, page 3). I would, however, like to make a correction to the first line of the article which states that "Purdue is now home to at least one excellent young chemist." I can state for a fact that Purdue is home to many excellent young chemists. Our department is ranked 16th in the nation out of several hundred and attracts some absolutely incredible talent at the assistant professor level. When we advertise for such a position, we receive many applications, sometimes more than 300. Through a rigorous screening process, we whittle the candidates down to one single person who is an absolutely first-rate chemist. Our young chemists have won many top awards, the best indication of our success at attracting brilliance. While I am thrilled at receiving this individual award, I could not have achieved it without the top-rate research environment in my department, thanks to both my junior peers and senior colleagues. Thank you again for the coverage.

Jillian Buriak, Ph.D.

Associate professor of chemistry
