Two tennis players commit
to Purdue for 2002
season
By Purdue Sports Information
Purdue mens tennis coach Tim Madden has signed
two players to National Letters of Intent.
Colin Foster and Paul Rose will join the Boilermaker
program next fall as members of the Class of 2006.
Foster, a native of Western Springs, Ill., will
bring an impressive resume to West Lafayette. Last February, the all-state
performer placed third at the 18-and-under Midwest Closed Indoor Championships
in Indianapolis. Two months earlier, he placed seventh in the 16-and-under
Winter Super Nationals in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Foster was a doubles champion and singles quarterfinalist
at the 2000 Midwest Open Championships in Muncie, Ind., and he was a
fourth-place doubles finisher at the 1999 National Clay Court Championships
in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The senior at Lyons Township High School is
a member of the National Honor Society, Math Honor Society and Spanish
Honor Society.
"Colin has gained much experience at the highest
national junior level," Madden said. "He is an intelligent student on
and off the court and has a great work ethic. He creates as many obstacles
for opponents as opportunities for himself with his smart tactical style.
He has established a solid foundation in his groundstroke game and seems
to be on his way to a more aggressive style of play necessary in collegiate
tennis."
Rose, who comes from Glencoe, Ill., is a two-time
all-state selection and a member of back-to-back state champion teams
at New Trier High School (2000 and 2001). As a junior, Rose placed third
in the Illinois state tournament. In junior tennis last year, he was
a semifinalist at the Midwest Closed Doubles Championships and advanced
to the round of 16 at the Spring Super National. Rose won the doubles
title at the Southern Open in 1999 and 2000, and he was a semifinalist
in the Midwest Closed Doubles in 2000. He won the Midwest Open Doubles
crown in 1999.
Roses father, Peter, was an athlete at Michigan.
His brother, Pete, is on the Iowa tennis team.
"Paul comes from an athletic family and plays an
athletic-style tennis game," Madden said. "He outworks his opponents
and possesses the ability to overpower competition. It is refreshing
to see a strong national-level player consistently find ways to defeat
more technically skilled players. Paul likes to hit a big serve, play
with pace and seems determined to be a forward aggressive force. He
is a very intense competitor who knows the balance of playing with sportsmanship.
He is an all-around class act."
