Coach hopes volleyball recruits
will help revitalize team
By Purdue Sports Information
The Purdue volleyball program signed three players
to National Letters of Intent during the NCAAs early-signing period,
which began Nov. 14.
Coach Jeff Hulsmeyer thinks the talented trio will
help facilitate the revitalization of the Boilermaker program.
"If you asked for a single word to sum up this
class, it would have to be winners," Hulsmeyer said. "They all have
great athletic ability, and they are tested, skilled players who I think
will have an immediate impact on this team. In addition, because of
the success they have had individually, they will bring high expectations
for the group collectively."
Renata Dargan, a 5-11 setter, attends Providence
Catholic High School. As a senior, the New Lenox, Ill., native was named
All-American, all-state and all-area.
"Renata is a multi-talented person on and off the
court," Hulsmeyer said. "She will bring a lot of competition to the
gym, and will push Jen Bova in the setter position. Having Renata also
will guarantee a top-notch setter on both sides of the net in practice
situations."
Marie Franke, a 6-1 outside hitter, attends Parkway
West High School. The native of Baldwin, Mo., was an instrumental part
of her teams finish as runner-up in the state tournament.
"Marie will remind fans of Joanna Lowry in that
she handles the ball exceptionally well," Hulsmeyer said. "She is a
team leader and will bring a competitive edge and leadership skills
to this squad. She will definitely help with continuing this teams
development."
Sara Vitali, a 6-0 middle/outside hitter, attends
St. Charles East High School, and rounds out the 2002 recruiting class.
Vitali was a vital part of her teams 2001 Illinois state championship.
The St. Charles, Ill., native was born in Lafayette following the Purdue
quarterback career of her father, Mark Vitali, who played at Purdue
from 1974 to 1976.
"Sara is a great athlete who has the potential
to play the middle or outside for us," Hulsmeyer said. "She moves very
well in the front row. I look forward to seeing her bring her high level
of play from the Chicago area."
