Library to hold annual holiday
sale

With the holiday season coming up and most students
on tight budgets, the Tippecanoe County Public Library's annual holiday
book boutique may provide some affordable holiday presents.
The sale will feature a wide variety of items including
art prints, new and gently used books, sweatshirts, polo shirts and
even boxers. The sale opens with a members-only preview from 7:30 to
9:30 p.m. Friday, when members receive a 20 percent discount on most
items. Memberships start at $10 and are available at the door.
After that, the sale continues from 9 a.m. to 6
p.m. on Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for people to
do some seasonal shopping, and the community should be happy to hear
that the proceeds go back into the library," said Amy Paget, the foundation
librarian.
The holiday sale is being put on by the Friends
of the Library and raised a total of about $6,500 last year. Rita Bulington,
president of the group, said, "This sale is unlike our other three sales
in the fact that all items are either brand new or barely used. There
will not be any books with writings in the bindings or torn pages; all
of these are really nice donations."
Her personal goal for this year is $8,000, which
seems realistic by the quality of material on sale. Some of the better
items include matted and framed pages from a 1901 Mother Goose book
and limited-edition signed books from such local authors as John Riggs,
Robert Campbell and Bob Creeble. Also on display will be signed and
numbered prints by Indiana artist Rosemary Lawton-Thomas.
Most of the money raised will go to the new Ivy
Tech joint-use library that is opening soon. This library is unlike
most others in that it will be a campus and community library available
to everyone. The money will also go to fund items for the libraries,
such as magnifiers for the visually impaired, book drops, books and
scholarships.
"This is the best bargain in town," Bulington said.
"We will have punch and cookies too. It's not only a sale but a party!"
