Lafayette plans Union Street
closing

Motorists who use Union Street on a regular basis
may find their morning commute more difficult Monday morning.
The reason for the increased difficulty is that
Union Street will be closed between 15th and 17th streets effective
9 a.m. Monday.
Citing a May 1999 report, Dan Auckley, a Lafayette
traffic coordinator, said the closing could affect up to 12,000 motorists
per weekday.
Opal Kuhl, engineer for the City of Lafayette,
said the closing was necessary so that workers could install storm sewer
drains along that stretch of road. Kuhl said the work was related to
the Lafayette Railroad Relocation Project.
Union Street's traffic will be detoured around
the construction area by way of 14th Street.
The city expects the construction to last until
March 1.
"We're looking forward to getting the pipes in
place," said Kuhl.
Kuhl said she expected there to be some confusion
the first few days of the closing, but said she thinks motorists will
find a detour route and grow accustomed to it.
"Many people may use (U.S.) 26, but many citizens
will use local roads," she said.
