Martin Luther King Jr. marched with thousands in
the name of equality.
On Monday, students and faculty will walk together
in honor of his efforts and in the name of peace.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Walk 2002 will
begin at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Black Cultural Center. Participants
will travel down State Street and the walk will end at Stewart Center.
HOPE Ministries will host a Martin Luther King Jr. musical celebration
in Loeb Playhouse following the walk.
Chrystal Westerhaus, president of the Black Student
Union and a sophomore in the School of Management, said, "Anyone can
walk. It's a good time to see so many students and faculty come out
with the same goals." She expects that at least 100 participants will
take part in the walk.
"Last year we had a pretty good turnout. It kind
of grows as you walk because people kind of see what you're doing and
they join in," said Lauren Guy, a sophomore in the School of Management
and member of the Black Student Union.
Guy said that the walk is an effort to "communify
the campus" and teach the history of Martin Luther King Jr.
Westerhaus said that King's message was for peace.
"It's more than a day off," she said. "People should
take the day and use it for what it's supposed to be used for."
One of King's greatest fights was against segregation,
said Westerhaus. "A lot of things we have today we didn't have at that
point in time."
