North's sacrifices illustrate his true American patriotism

The editorial staff blasted Oliver North as a patriotic role model because of his involvement in Iran-Contra. One thing that struck me as odd was how the editorial mentioned that North received immunity for his testimony, yet made such a big deal out of the fact he wasn't jailed or fined. I'm no lawyer, but I'm almost positive that immunity has been used to get people to testify against others throughout history. The editorial stated, "True patriotism is not exemplified by committing crimes and playing political games, it is done by the Americans who sacrifice themselves and their futures so that our country can live on." Geez, I thought that is what the men and women of the U.S. Military do on a daily basis. They risk their lives and their futures so our country may survive and our citizens may keep their rights and freedoms. I am sure that's what Oliver North was doing when he set all those deals up. He was trying to get Americans out of harm's way and back to safety. He may have broken laws, but he sacrificed his career and his reputation to try and get those American hostages back. In my eyes, that was patriotism in every sense of the word.
