Student allegedly lies to police

From Staff Reports

The Purdue student who reported being sexually assaulted on campus on Jan. 10 was arrested Tuesday on charges of perjury and false informing in connection with a sexual assault investigation.

Vanessa R. Prather, 19, a freshman in the School of Liberal Arts, was arrested on charges derived from a police report that Prather submitted Jan. 10 stating she had been sexually assaulted between the Memorial Union and Stewart Center.

"Through the investigation there were discrepancies in the account of the activity. Because of the inconsistencies and discrepancies, we continued to investigate and (Prather) later admitted that what she said was not true," said Capt. Ron Fosnaugh of the Purdue police.

Perjury is a Class D felony which carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a $10,000 fine. False informing is a Class A misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of up to one year in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Prather was admitted to the Tippecanoe County Jail at 9:14 a.m. on Tuesday, but released at 10:20 a.m. after posting bond.
