Oliver North articles make great debate for patriots, citizensI think that the college Republicans have done us all a great service by inviting Oliver North to speak. His presence on campus has sparked a reaction that is in the best interests of everyone. There are not only letters to the Exponent, but articles in the Exponent, the Journal and Courier and other papers. These letters and articles mostly revolve around two themes, "What makes a good patriot" and "What makes a good US citizen," which are things that, believe it or not, there are a lot of differences of opinion about. It is too bad that the Exponent has their 10-letter limit on any subject because I would like to see people debate these two concepts for a lot longer. It would give people a real insight into the differences that exist in the personalities and thinking of the people around them. Maybe the Exponent could print a special section once or twice a week devoted to letters on these subjects. It certainly would be interesting to me, but even if it does not happen I would like to thank the college Republicans for spurring on this type of debate. Richard A. Hayward |
