Grand Prix Foundation provides scholarships

Grand Prix is one of the largest, most talked-about and attended events at Purdue each year. Students pay to attend the event in order to watch the race.

When the Grand Prix Foundation was formed as a part of the Alumni Foundation, members were told that the race would only continue if the money earned from the race was spent wisely; and therefore they decided to award scholarships to Purdue students.

"When the race first started in 1958, the organization was told that they must spend (earned) money for a good cause. It was all student-driven to give scholarships," explained Ryan DeLaCroix, a senior in the School of Liberal Arts and the director of special events for the Grand Prix Foundation. "Over the past 45 years, we have given more than $1 million in scholarship money," he said.

The money from last year’s Grand Prix race funded scholarships for this year. For the 2001-2002 school year, the foundation awarded different monetary amounts to 21 scholarship winners at Purdue.

Any Purdue student who has at least two semesters left at Purdue may apply for a Grand Prix scholarship. The Grand Prix Foundation senior board will then "interview all applicants and decide who gets scholarships based on academics and extracurricular activities," said Casie Walukonis, a graduate student and the promotions director for the Grand Prix Foundation.

The process for finding scholarship winners begins two weeks from now when student board members of the Grand Prix Foundation begin their interviewing process. DeLaCroix said the organization's members "will know by that weekend who has won and the winners will know ahead of time, and then the scholarship will be awarded at the race."

In order to be awarded scholarship money by the foundation, students must complete an application to be reviewed by the Grand Prix Foundation senior board, a group of twelve Purdue students. DeLaCroix says the student board members look at "grades compared to major, how involved the student is on campus and in the community and their need (for scholarship money)."

Each year, the Grand Prix Foundation hosts the Grand Prix race by receiving money from many sponsors, including Ford Motor Co., Kimberly Clark, Coca-Cola Co. and Proctor & Gamble, to name a few.

"Money is raised from sponsors, T-shirt sales and ticket sales and any money left over after expenditures is put toward scholarships," explained Walukonis.
