use of logo in documents

Documents sent from Purdue may soon contain a new
letterhead logo.
Murray Blackwelder, the vice president for advancement,
said it is important for the University to look at how it represents
itself to the public. He said the University has a manual that states
when certain University representations should be used in documents,
but that it has been a while since the manual has been properly followed.
"The key thing is how we use the Purdue University
logo, we've gotten away from the usage manual and we're starting to
put anything on the letterhead," Blackwelder said.
In order to add uniformity to all of the documents
that the University sends out Blackwelder said as well as working with
a committee inside in the University, they will be hiring Jewel Marketing
and Communication, a company out of Mishawaka, Ind.
"(President Jischke) has asked Purdue communications
to work with the outside firm to come up with a new graphic identity
for Purdue," said Joe Bennett, the vice president for University relations.
It will be things that would appear on stationary."
Purdue has previously worked with Jewel Marketing
and Communication on other applications.
"The company is already responsible for helping
us with our television commercials," said Blackwelder. "So we will be
consulting them for any advice we may need on any changes we make."
Bennett said that when Jischke first came to Purdue
he thought that one thing the University needed was a strong representation.
"We want to have a strong consistent message that
will carry through all different media messages," said Bennett.
This doesn't mean that the University will be changing
the current logo of a griffin, but Blackwelder said it might change
the way the University uses the griffin in certain documents.
Blackwelder also said that cost is not an issue.
"The cost will not really be that great, a bit
of money will be spent with the Jewel organization, but nothing that
is hugely significant," he said.
