Purdue personalities offer Super Bowl party advice

By Hannah Brooks

The Super Bowl is this Sunday and many students will get together with friends to celebrate and watch the St. Louis Rams and the New England Patriots battle it out.

Brenda Shea, student body president and a senior in the School of Liberal Arts, wants the Patriots to win.

"I am a lifelong Patriots fan because I was born and raised in New England … I'll keep my fingers crossed for them," Shea said.

She plans to watch the big game at Buffalo Wild Wings Grill and Bar, 360 Brown St., on one of its many big-screen TVs.

"I am looking forward to some of the entertaining commercials, including Britney Spears' new Pepsi ad," she said.

She is also looking forward to U2's halftime performance.

"I am certain Mariah Carey's rendition of the national anthem will be especially heartfelt, due to the sad events of last September and the new patriotism in this country," she said.

Purdue President Martin Jischke and his wife, Patty, said they would be attending the women's basketball game instead of a Super Bowl party this Sunday.

They are both cheering for the Rams, however.

"They are faster and just better," Jischke said. "Kurt Warner and Marshall Faulk are impressive football players."

Although they will not attend a party, the Jischkes have some ideas of things to do and eat at a Super Bowl party.

Mrs. Jischke suggested working on a jigsaw puzzle while watching the game. Jischke suggested eating chips and drinking soft drinks while watching the game.

Stu Schweigert, safety for the Purdue football team and a sophomore in the School of Technology, said he has no specific plans for the Super Bowl other than just watching the game.

He said he hopes the New England Patriots will win because he did not anticipate that they would get this far, but they came out tough in the end.

Schweigert said it would be nice to see Matt Light, a starting rookie for the Patriots and former Purdue football player, win a Super Bowl game.

"I played with (Light) here," he said.

Schweigert's suggestions for good Super Bowl snacks include chips with salsa and salsa con queso, pizza and hot dogs.

Kyle Orton, quarterback for the Purdue football team and a freshman in the School of Liberal Arts, said that he thinks St. Louis will win the Super Bowl because they have been to the Super Bowl before and New England has an inexperienced quarterback.

Orton said that he plans to watch the game with some friends. He said that his idea of a good Super Bowl party would include good friends, chips, dip, hot dogs and his favorite Super Bowl snack, nachos.
