The successor of the late West Lafayette City Council
at-large committee member Arni Cohen was named this weekend.
Cohen, who was also the founder of the Arni's restaurant
chain, passed away on Feb. 7.
Linda Cohen, the wife of the late Arni Cohen, was
selected unanimously by the West Lafayette Democratic precinct committee
members, Mayor Sonya Margerum said.
Margerum said it was a "packed house" of approximately
50 people at Democratic headquarters in Lafayette when the appointment
was made.
Margerum is very confident in Cohen's ability to
serve the city of West Lafayette, noting that Cohen had served on the
original West Lafayette planning committee.
Cohen said she was asked if she would like the
appointment, and decided that it "was something I would like to do."
She said she plans to use her experience in the
community to help her in her new position.
"I'm always interested in the services the city
provides to its constituents as well as the quality of life (in the
city)," Cohen said.
Cohen also stated that she wanted to help enable
and implement the strategic plan for the city that she helped to create.
Though she said she is sorry for the reason of
her appointment, she said she was up to the challenge that serving on
the West Lafayette City Council would present.
Cohen will serve the remainder of the term, which
runs through 2003.
