Facilities to stay open during break

By Matt Lindner
Assistant Campus Editor

Staying on campus for Spring Break can be a lonely experience. Fortunately, for those who aren't planning to leave West Lafayette, there will be places open during the week.

All libraries will be open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on the weekdays. John Riley, a staff member at Hicks Undergraduate Library, said the library is a popular place to hang out during that week.

"Surprisingly, there are a lot of people who use the library during Spring Break, in particular, international students and others who are stuck on campus," Riley said.

The Recreational Sports Center will also be open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. from Monday through Friday for those who wish to get exercise over break. Also, the recreation center in the Purdue Memorial Union will be open from noon until midnight during the week for students to go bowling or shoot pool.

Some students are staying on campus not because they can't go somewhere, but rather because they choose not to leave the comforts of their campus home. Derrick Kearney, a junior in the Schools of Engineering, will use the week to catch up on his schoolwork.

"Basically, during that week I'm going to work on my EE357 project and work on studying for my math exam to make sure I don't fail that, also do some apartment cleaning and that's about it," Kearney said. "I'm going to take some chill time, not worry about going somewhere for Spring Break and how to pay for it."

Should Kearney wish to leave his apartment to work on his homework or simply check his e-mail, he would be able to do so in any one of three computing labs that will be open Wednesday through Saturday. The Liberal Arts and Education Building, Stanley Coulter Hall and Stewart Center will be closed on Monday and Tuesday but will be open from 9 a.m. through 6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, before resuming normal hours on Sunday.

All of the residence halls will remain open; however, they will not serve food during the week. Also, all cash and Boiler Express operations such as Boiler Junction and the Knight Spot grill will close for the week, as well.

Instead, students looking to save money on food may eat at the Sagamore Restaurant in the Union, Tuesday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Also, The Union Market will be open during the week from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and the Sweet Shop will be open from 2-9 p.m.
