INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. The Purdue women's basketball
team attributes low field goal scoring to their 55-41 loss to Indiana.
The No.1 seeded Purdue Boilermakers shot a season
low of 25 percent from the floor and 41 points against the No. 5 seeded
Indiana Hoosiers in last night's upset.
Purdue coach Kristy Curry said poor shooting was
a big part of the game.
"The bottom line is that we just didn't shoot the
ball well today," Curry said. "We missed break away layups, we missed
free throws, and that's uncharacteristic of us."
Indiana senior guard Heather Cassady scored 13
points and said that beating Purdue was something the Hoosier players
wanted one more chance at.
"We just wanted one more crack at them and we got
our shot," Cassady said. "It's overwhelming."
The loss to Indiana, in game eight of the Big Ten
Tournament, was Purdue's first loss to the Hoosiers since Jan. 25, 1998.
The last time the two teams met Purdue won 79-55 at Mackey Arena.
Indiana will see their first tournament final in
the history of the Big Ten Tournament.
Indiana coach Kathi Bennett said the Hoosiers played
very well on defense to keep the Boilers in a low scoring position.
"Our defensive performance today was very special,
and we felt that one of the keys to the game was how we limited them
to one offensive shot," Bennett said. "I felt from an offensive stand
point we really spread them out."
Purdue forward Shereka Wright said it was not a
good shooting night for the Boilers.
"We had some good looks, but the shots just didn't
fall," Wright said.
Curry said that missing shots caused her team to
get down.
"We missed a shot and the other one fed off of
it and the other one fed off of it," Curry said. "We tried to pick them
up and make sure they understand that things can happen on the defensive
end and that can make your shots fall."
