Residence hall experiences application increase

By Yuri Victor

Despite a 200-application increase to live in Cary Quadrangle, some students are seeking residence elsewhere.

In reaction to students' problems in the residence halls, Purdue has dedicated the past two years to reconstructing the older rooms in Cary Quadrangle.

Tom Paczolt, the manager of Cary, said the remodeled rooms are essentially twice the size of the Cary small double and have walk-in closets. Every two rooms will share a bathroom and some of the units have private baths. The rooms will also have air conditioning and the benefit of being newer.

All students will receive the same benefits including food, residence hall and sports and organizational services.

"The rooms are bigger and you're closer to campus. I don't have to cook and besides the construction it's not too bad," said Jonathan Oliver, a freshman in the Schools of Engineering, who plans on moving back to Cary.

The new rooms have turned out so well that the demand has also increased.

"We are up a couple of hundred requests to live in Cary. There will be about 50 percent freshman next year," said Paczolt.

"This tells us students are pleased with the renovations since we have had so many requests. It's good to see that students are appreciating the work. East and Northeast are filled with returning Cary residents. It's a good sign."

Even with the structural changes on Cary Quadrangle some students are unimpressed.

"I want to get away from the dorms. For the price apartments are just as good," said Mark Fitzenberger, a current resident of Cary Quadrangle and a sophomore in the School of Technology.

Some of the older rooms are so old they are not able to support Purdue Ethernet forcing students to use a slower alternative.

Fitzenberger said, "Dorms don't offer any privacy to better help me in my education.

"I paid my dues; I did my two years and I'm done."

Purdue will continue work this year, renovating Cary's West Residence Hall.
