PSG faces challenge of inexperienced
members

The new Purdue Student Government president and
vice president will soon be facing the challenge of an inexperienced
senate.
There will be only one senator from this semester's
senate even running for re-election.
Senators had a variety of reasons for not running
for another term.
Chuck Kaplan, the outgoing senator in the School
of Health Sciences, said he wasn't running again because he was in the
middle of changing his major.
"I decided not to run because I am (changing schools)
because I do not feel as though I would be able to represent the students
in the School of Health Sciences very effectively," Kaplan said.
For others, the challenge of being an effective
senator and well-rounded student proved to be too daunting a task.
Beth Horn, the outgoing senator in the Undergraduate
Studies Program, said there's a lot more to being a PSG senator than
one would think.
"One of the things that people don't realize is
that it takes quite a bit of time, and to do the best job possible I
didn't have the time to do my job as a senator the best that I could
do it," Horn said. "I was taking away time from being a senator and
devoting it to school when I should have been devoting that time to
being a senator in order to best represent the students."
Kirstin Leach will be returning for a second term
as a PSG senator in the School of Consumer and Family Sciences. She
said the impact of the work that this year's Senate has done would be
felt later on.
"The effects of change usually cannot be seen overnight
but this year's senate has worked very hard to make things better for
the years to come, so I was surprised that more senators would not re-run,"
Leach said. "However, it is a time commitment and a great experience.
I think it is very respectful that those who know they will not have
the time for it next year are giving someone else the chance."
Leach added that she was looking forward to the
opportunity to learn and grow with a new group of people.
"I think this will be a great opportunity for the
new administration of PSG to start fresh and put all the hard work of
last year's group to use," Leach said. "I am looking forward to meeting
the new people and I will be learning the new ways right along with
them."
